World’s best pro and age-group athletes featured in Ironman Hawaii 2014 World Championship results

When you look at the star-studded list of pro triathletes who qualified to race in Kona on Saturday October 11, 2014 picking the winner seemed like a daunting task.

Half the battle for the pros seems to be getting to the Kona start line healthy and it seems like every year a top contender has to deal with a devastating injury.

For example with just a week to go before the race Mellisa Hauschildt had to withdraw from Ironman Hawaii 2014.

On the Wednesday before the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Mont-Tremblant Hauschildt had a pre-race massage that resulted in a torn pectoral muscle.

She was diagnosed with a “torn pectoral, intercostals and connective tissue and subluxed rib.”

Here are her WTC race results for 2014 leading up to Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant 2014.

1st Abu Dhabi International Triathlon
1st Ironman Australia
2nd Ironman 70.3 Vineman
1st Ironman Racine (course record)
1st Ironman 70.3 Timberman

She was forced to DNF in Mont-Tremblant. What a costly, costly injury on so many levels.

I have no doubt that Mellisa had a legitimate shot at a podium finish in Kona. Although fairly new to the full Ironman distance she showed she had endurance to match her speed when she won Ironman Australia.

I’m sure everyone in the triathlon community wishes Mellisa well and a full and speedy recovery and hopefully she will be back racing for the top spot on the podium in Hawaii in 2015.

In 2013 it was Mary Beth Ellis who ran into bad luck when she had a freak bike training accident in the weeks leading up to Ironman Hawaii. It ended her hopes of a podium finish in Kona.

I remember thinking several years back when Mary Beth won three Ironman races in the space of about six weeks(including setting a Penticton course record that had stood for twenty years) that one day she would be a World Champion and I truly believe this is her year.

Mary Beth Ellis is my pick to win it all for 2014.
She is fit and healthy and most of all she is incredibly durable and tough and that’s an essential hallmark of all Ironman Hawaii winners.

It’s one thing to race against the best in the world, but it’s another thing altogether to deal with the blistering heat and relentless “ho’omumuku” crosswinds that has left many a pro Ironman finish line dream in ruins in those last desperate miles of the marathon on the Queen Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway .

Earlier in the season Mary Beth put in a 50 minute swim in the Melbourne Asia-Pacific Ironman Championship 2014 to lead the way onto the bike course.

The only one who managed to catch her was Caroline Steffen who has qualified in 3rd place for Ironman Hawaii 2014 and finished in 5th spot in Ironman Hawaii 2013.

It was certainly an indication that Ellis is in top form and can match the top female pros stride for stride.

(Mary Beth was in the mix for the podium for much of the race but couldn’t sustain the pace and finished in ninth. An excellent effort!)

Michelle Vesterby of Denmark has been improving every year and could very well break into the top five this year. In 2013 she was eighth and just two minutes away from fifth place Caroline Steffen and Vesterby seems to be in fine form again this year.

Word is that new coach Luc Van Lierde has really helped Vesterby improve her run and that could well make all the difference if she is in touch with the leaders at the beginning of the 26.2-mile marathon.

(Like many of the pros, Michelle had difficulties sustaining the pace in the bike, but she held her own in the run and finished just out of the top ten. No matter what, she never stops smiling!)

All the best to Mary Beth Ellis, Michelle Vesterby, and all the amazing pro women who are putting it all on the line to make their mark in the Ironman Hawaii 2014 World Championship results.

For the pro men it really looked going into the race like Ivan Rana could do very well and was a definite threat for a podium spot.

Rana won Ironman Austria 2014 and in the process recorded the second fastest time in Ironman history.

Something to note is his 2:43 marathon time in Austria. If he can stay close in on the hot and windy Ironman Hawaii bike course and not expend too much energy he could be a force on the run.

He has speed to burn with endurance and experience to match and is used to racing under extreme pressure as he has raced in the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2004 and finished fifth in Sydney and Beijing.

In Beijing he was less than a minute behind eventual winner Jan Fredeno.

Ivan Rana of Spain is my pick to be an upset winner of Ironman Hawaii 2014. Sure he might be a long shot, but in Kona anything can happen and usually does.

(I chose Ivan Rana on the strength of his tremendous running ability, but he lost touch on the bike course and was left with too much to do in the run despite recording the fastest marathon of the day…..2:44:38 Wow!)

Realistically there are probably 15 men who could come out on top of the Ironman Hawaii 2014 World Championship results if all the stars line up for them but there has been an invasion of very fast, very accomplished Olympic athletes joining the pro Ironman ranks and doing very well and Rana is one of them.

Also, you can include Jan Frodeno who won the gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and he also goes into the race as a favorite.

Best of luck to Ivan and all the very talented male pros who have made it to the Kona 2014 start line.

IRONMAN HAWAII RACE DAY OCTOBER 11, 2014

The 2187 pro and age-group starters in today’s race were greeted by water temperatures hovering around the 79F mark as they answered the starting cannon in Kona Harbor. The water was very choppy and according to all reports it’s the roughest the water has been all week.

The 2.4-mile(no wetsuit)swim was the beginning of their journey to the finish line on Ali’i Drive in one of to most iconic endurance races in the world.

Here are the pro start lists for men and women.

Calm before the storm

Andy Potts swam himself into the early lead for the pro men but Olympian Jan Frodeno was right there with him.

At the turn back toward the swim finish you get to stare right into the rising sun if you happen to breathe to the right. It can be very disconcerting and those in the know will wear tinted sunglasses or bi-lateral breathe.

On the return trip Jan Frodeno took over the lead in the swim and began to pull away. Andy Potts caught him again and passed him and was officially the first in the swim by about one second.

There was a group of eight or ten behind them. Marko Albert, Andrew Starykowicz, Pete Jacobs, Ben Hoffman, Paul Mathews, Andreas Raelert, Luke McKenzie, Van Lierde, and Andy Potts were a few in that group.

Ivan Rana and Craig Alexander came out behind the lead group.

Luke McKenzie

As expected it was Andrew Starykowicz in the lead on the 112-bike course as the pro men made their way past the ten-mile mark.

However just one minute separated the top 27 pro men.

Igor Morelli was in second place just 8 seconds back of the leader with Frederik Van Lierde in third 21 seconds behind.

At the 45 mile mark Starykowicz had a lead of 57 seconds over Sebastian Kienle. There was a group of seven led by Maik Twelsiek in third 1:03 back followed by Nils Frommhold, Andy Potts, Frederik Van Lierde, Jan Frodeno, Marino Vanhoenacker, Joe Gambles, Tim O’Donnell, and Igor Amorelli. Only 21 seconds separated these nine pro men from each other.

There was no blowing the field away this year on the bike course for Starykowicz as he was passed by Maik Twelsiek who became the new leader as the pro men approached Hawi.

It looks like my pick Ivan Rana has run into problems on the bike course and is 6:40 back. But he has plenty of elite company. TJ Tolakson, Bart Aernouts, Ronnie Schildknecht, and Paul Ambrose are all back there with him.

The winds are howling in Hawi and now is the time the race really begins.

Almost halfway through the 112-mile bike course from Hell and Sebastian Kienle is out in front. He has lead of just six seconds over fellow German Maik Twelsiek.

At 70 miles it’s Kienle, Twelsiek, Vanhoenacker, Van Lierde, and Hoffman.

At 75 miles Twelsiek and Kienle changed places and Vanhoenacker was now in third 1:45 back. Van Lierde slipped back into fourth and was losing ground and was 2:02 behind the leader.

Jan Fredeno had to sit out a penalty and that set him over seven minutes back of the lead.

It’s coming down to the marathon and crunch time as the leaders on the bike close to with ten miles of the bike/run transition.

It’s about that time in the race when you can usually expect to hear about pros calling it a day and dropping out. So far Terenzoe Bozzone, Tyler Butterfield, Faris Al-Sultan, and Eneko Llanos have dropped out.

Kienle will be taking a lead of around three minutes over Twelsiek onto the marathon course. All the others are slipping further and further behind. Third place Vanhonenacker is over three minutes back in third. Van Lierde is over five minutes back in fourth.

As his marathon begins apparently Kienle has been nursing a nagging injury for some time. This is not great news because you can’t fool the Iron Gods and if you’re not 100% the Ironman Hawaii marathon course will sniff it out every time.

If he is completely healed he will be hard to catch.

It appears that he is just fine as before long his lead was over nine minutes on Ben Hoffman who had moved into second five seconds ahead of Frederik Van Lierde who had taken over third from Twelsiek.

At the halfway mark of the marathon Kienle is still running strong and it really looks like he is in top form and feeling no affects from his injury. He has a lead of over eight minutes on Frederik Van Lierde. Ben Hoffman is 36 seconds behind Van Lierde. Tim Van Berkel is fourth as the Energy Lab approaches.

Van Lierde has run into trouble and fallen five places into 7th.

Ben Hoffman is second, Frodeno has himself into a podium spot in third.

Jodie Swallow shot into the lead for the pro women in the 2.4-mile swim. A pack including many of the major contenders was following behind her. Meredith Kessler, Mary Beth Ellis, and Gina Crawford were in that pack.

Meredith Kessler took over the lead on the return leg of the swim.

Michelle Vesterby found herself swimming alone in sort of a no-man’s-land between two groups.

As they entered transition one Amanda Stevens was first, Jodie Swallow second, and Meredith Kessler third in the lead group. Mary Beth Ellis was right behind them.

After the first seven miles of biking it was Jodie Swallow in front but she had company. Mary Beth Ellis was one second behind her and Meredith Kessler was 12 seconds back. Then it was Amanda Stevens at 1:13, Liz Blatchford 1:14, and Gina Crawford 1:39 back of the leader.

At the thirty mile mark Jodie Swallow was in the lead and at the 35 mile mark she was suddenly over 3:30 back of the lead. Often that indicates mechanical problems or a flat.

Canadian Heather Wurtele having a great ride.

It was Meredith Kessler moving into first place with Mary Beth Ellis staying close 15 seconds behind the leader. Then it was Daniela Ryf 45 seconds back, Rachel Joyce 55, Caroline Steffen 1:00 and Liz Blatchford 1:01.

At the 45 mile mark Daniela Ryf made a move and took over first place and bumped Kessler back into second.

My pick to finish top five this year—Michelle Vesterby–was sitting back in 10th place six minutes from the leader. Probably wanted to be much closer than that and surprising to see her slipping of the pace as she is an excellent cyclist.

At the 50-mile mark it’s Daniela Ryf with a 1:30 lead over Rachel Joyce. Mary Beth Ellis was still hanging in their in third just three seconds behind Joyce.

At 65 miles Ryf extended her lead and is 2:03 ahead.

At the 90 mile mark the lead was over three minutes with just 12 seconds separating Joyce and Ellis.

Ryf took a lead of two minutes over Rachel Joyce onto the 26.2-mile run course. Mary Beth Ellis was still right there in third place about 3:30 back.

It took three miles for Rachel Joyce to make up 15 seconds. If she were to continue at that rate she would eventually catch Ryf a few miles from the finish line.

My pick to win Mary Beth Ellis was slipping back and was 4:20 behind the leader with Jodie Swallow in 4th just one minute behind her. At this point in the race, all three podium spots were still up for grabs.

Caroline Steffen and Mirinda Carfrae were both beginning to move up and were 7:23 and 13:06 back of the lead in fifth and sixth.

Heather Wurtele of Canada was having another great race after an excellent third place performance in the Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant World Championship and was in the mix in seventh place. By the way Daniela Ryf won that race and is going for a World Championship double.

For the first time Ryf appears to be faltering in the Energy Lab.

Rachel Joyce is closing some ground and is about 3:30 back with lots of running left to do.

Carfrae is charging as well and has moved into third with ten miles still to run. She is 6:39 back.

Wow! Carfrae blew by Joyce and took over second place and has her sights set on Ryf.

What an incredible performance by Carfrae and in a time when back-to-back champions in Kona seemed like a thing of the past she just might do it.

Mirinda Carfrae has taken over the lead. She made up an incredible 14 minute deficit from the bike.

Mirinda of Australia wins top spot in the Ironman Hawaii 2014 World Championship results.

Great job by Daniela Ryf of Switzerland who hangs on for second place.
