Would a changing of the guard highlight the Ironman Hawaii World Championship Results 2015

The top of the 2015 Ironman Hawaii qualifying lists features tried and tested pros. Sebastien Kienle, Jan Frodeno, and Frederik Van Lierde top the list for the pro men and Mirinda Carfrae, Daniela Ryf, and Jodie Swallow for the women.

The winners of Ironman Hawaii 2014 were Sebastian Kienle and Mirinda Carfrae. However it was Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf winning the Ironman European Championships this year.

Frodeno and Ryf posted dominating performances in Frankfurt. Frodeno’s winning time was a sizzling 7:49:48 with Sebastian Kienle crossing the finish line over ten minutes later in 8:01:39. Ryf crossed the finish line in 8:51:00 with Julia Gajer and and Caroline Stephen about ten minutes and twenty minutes behind respectively. It will be interesting to see if Ironman Frankurt was an indicator of what might happen this race.

Favorites aside, many great pros posted sensational results over the past year and picking the winners of Ironman Hawaii 2015 is not simply a matter of looking at the top five in the 2015 Kona Points Rankings.

Canadians Lionel Sanders and Brent McMahon are 9th and 16th in Kona Ranking Points and appear to be legitimate Canadian contenders with Angela Naeth(12th)and Heather Wurtele(16th)figuring to be in the mix for the podium for the women. Also beware of Mary Beth Ellis and Leanda Cave who both have the potential to find the top of the podium in the Ironman Hawaii World Championship results 2015.

It seems to be an all or nothing approach when it comes to Ironman Hawaii for many of the pro men. A surprising 17 pro men were listed as DNF in 2014. However only four pro women did not finish the race. I suppose they reached the point in the race where they were so far back they decided to call it a day.

However the ones who stuck it out at the front of the pack were in a real battle for the podium. In 2014 there was little to separate the top finishers. Although Sebastian Kienle won the race by over five minutes, just four minutes separated the next six finishers.

This is what makes Ironman Hawaii so great and also what makes it so difficult to pick the winners. You just never know what the Iron Gods have in store when you gather the greatest triathletes from around the world all in one venue. A venue that is often haunted by searing heat, Kona’s howling Mumuku winds, mechanical failures, and drafting penalties that can cost you five places at the finish line once the dust settles.

Getting set for the Ironman Hawaii swim start in Kona Harbor. Image by Tessa Capistrano 2014.

The 2.4-mile swim got underway in what is considered very good conditions for Kona. The swell was minimal and the water temperature was 79F.

Back in 1984 a Brazilian Olympian named Djan Madruga managed the swim course in a very fast 47:48.2. It will be interesting to see if that time can be beaten or matched in today’s race. It’s doubtful, because the swim is the one discipline that has not gotten faster over the years. Diet and training methods have led to faster overall marathon times and of course bike technology today is light years ahead of 31 years ago. That being said, in 1984 John Howard did the 112-mile bike course on his very low tech bike without clipless pedals or aerobars in 4:56:49. Considering the oppressive heat and howling winds in 1984 that was pretty impressive.

THE RACE-PRO MEN

As the race got underway for the pro men it was Andy Potts, Dylan McNeice, and Jan Frodeno reaching the turn at the halfway mark first. They were two minutes ahead of a trailing group that contained Viktor Zyemtsev and Ronnie Schildknecht and several others.

Dylan McNeice of New Zealand was first out of the water in a time of 50:48. Jan Frodeno of Germany who finished third overall in 2014 was two seconds behind in second place. Andy Potts had another strong swim and was just eight seconds behind the leader.

Near the halfway point of the bike it was Ben Hoffman leading the way. He had plenty of company as Andi Boecherer, Sebastian Kienle, Jan Frodeno, Frederik Van Lierde, Tyler Butterfield, Andy Potts, Tim O’Donnell and Luke McKenzie were just seconds behind him. It was playing out much like previous years when the favorites all tried to keep each other in sight and let the chips fall where they may in the run.

In the last quarter of the bike course there were no less than 16 men within sight of each other. In the closing miles before reaching the bike/run transition it was 2014 champion Sebastian Kienle in front with Jan Frodeno and Timothy O’Donnell both close behind. Eneko Llanos was 40 seconds back in fourth and Brent McMahon of Canada was still within striking distance.

The fastest bike split was recorded by Sebastian Kienle with a time of 4:25:53 as he sets out onto the run course to attempt to defend his 2015 title. He will have his work cut out with fellow German Jan Frodeno, Timothy O’Donnell of the USA, and Brent McMahon of Canada right there with him.

Frodeno is a man on a mission. Running a pace of 5:30 per mile for the first 3 miles is risky. The temperature as the run started was 90F. That means the heat radiating off the highway will be well over the 110F mark. It just seems that pace is the key no matter if you are an age-grouper or a pro.

Luke Bell is out of the race and there will most likely be many more calling it a day before long. Ben Hoffman was walking and O’Donnell also began to falter and fall further behind the leader Frodeno. As they passed through the ten mile mark O’Donnell had about 2:30 to make up, but he wasn’t ready to throw in the towel and fought his way back to within a minute.

Jan Frodeno….the Ironman Hawaii World Champion for 2015

Kienle would not be repeating as champion as he was falling off the pace and was passed by fellow German Andreas Raelert who moved into third and was perhaps the biggest threat of all with about ten miles left to run.

Once Frodeno made the last turn onto the Queen K. Highway he had about six miles left to run and his lead was still three minutes over O’Donnell. The only two within striking distance if he happened to slow down were O’Donnell or Raelert. Kienle in fourth place was 6:30 back. In the final two miles it was Raelert taking over second place from O’Donnell and it was shaping up to be a one-two finish for Germany.

Jan Frodeno crosses the finish line and wins the top of the podium in the Ironman Hawaii World Championship results 2015 with a time of 8:14:40.

Andreas Raelert finished second and Timothy O’Donnell was third.

THE RACE-PRO WOMEN

Much as expected it was Jody Swallow leading the pro women in the swim. She was the first one to make the turn and stretched her lead out to over 25 meters as she made the return trip. Daniela Ryf of Switzerland one of the pre-race favorites was in the first chase group. Mirinda Carfrae was two minutes off the pace swimming in the third group.

Jody Swallow was first out of the water and was followed by Mary Beth Ellis, Leanda Cave, Michelle Vesterby, and Caroline Steffen. Michelle Vesterby of Denmark seems to be improving more and more every year and perhaps this will be the year she breaks into the top five. In 2014 she was 14th in 9:34:14 and in Ironman Hawaii 2013 she was 8th in 9:42:22. In Ironman Hawaii 2012 she was 12th in 9:42:22.

It was Daniela Ryf leading the way as the pro women neared the 45 mile mark. Much like the men’s race there was a pack tracking her progress just seconds back. Jodie Swallow, Leanda Cave, Mary Beth Ellis, Camilla Pedersen, Michelle Vesterby, Caroline Steffen, Annabel Luxford, and Liz Blatchford made up the main chase pack. Angela Naeth of Canada was six minutes back of the leader.

The race began to take its toll as Leanda Cave fell well off the pace of the leaders and was looking at a gap of over 15 minutes. 2014 winner Mirinda Carfrae retired from the race so a new champion was destined to be crowned for the pro women. Heather Wurtele of Canada ran into mechanical problems and that ended what might have been a top five finish for her taking into account how well she has been racing.

Daniela Ryf running to finish line and second place in Ironman Hawaii 2014. Her mission is to move up one spot on the podium.

Bummer for Naeth. Something happened on the bike and she is limping onto the run course. That could be it for her and she may be joining Carfrae on the DNF list. Great to see Michelle Vesterby of Denmark in fifth place on the run course. Everything depends on whether or not Daniela Ryf can maintain her big lead. If she falters things would become wide open with 2nd to 6th place women within three minutes of each other.

Ryf kept right on pushing and her lead grew to nine minutes over Swallow. Rachel Joyce moved into third and Mary Beth Ellis into fourth. Swallow began to falter and was passed by Joyce and Ellis and pushed back into fourth. Wow! Nice going Michelle Vesterby. She moved into fourth place past Swallow and then into third past Ellis. Jody Swallow dropped out of the race, but she gave it an excellent effort today.

With about three miles left to run it was still Ryf in first with a lead of over 12 minutes over Joyce. Liz Blatchford moved past Michelle Vesterby into third place.

Daniela Ryf is the Ironman World Champion for 2015! Her winning time is 8:57:57. Rachel Joyce is second, Liz Blatchford third, and Michelle Vesterby 4th. Excellent race for Heather Jackson in 5th in the Ironman Hawaii World Championship Results 2015.
