On Sunday August 25 an excellent group of pros and a sold-out field of age-group athletes put in strong efforts to claim their spot in the Ironman Louisville results 2013 in the sixth running of the race.

This is the first year that the WTC unveiled it’s new rolling-start swim format that’s meant to make the swim a bit less daunting for those who are new to the Ironman and Louisville featured the rolling start in their 2.4-mile swim in the Ohio River.

The two-loop 112-mile bike through pasture land and over the rolling hills of Oldham County was followed by a two-loop 26.2-mile marathon that would take them past the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, one of the most famous horse races in the world and part of the Triple Crown.

This was one of the last chances of the season for pros to earn Kona Ranking Points for the Ironman World Championships in Kona. Ironman Canada Whistler 2013 was also taking place on the same day as Louisville.

Patrick Evoe had a strong result in Ironman Australia 2013 and figured highly for the pro men in this race. Evoe is also the defending champion from Ironman Louisville 2012.

Chris McDonald worked his way to the front early in the bike stage and increased his lead to over eight minutes with about forty miles left to ride. Patrick Evoe had plenty of work to do at this stage if he wanted to defend his 2012 title. At the 90-mile mark with just 12 miles left to go the lead over Thomas Gerlach of Tucson, Arizona was 8:21 with Patrick Evoe third 8:22 back.

What a great bike split by Chris McDonald as he stops the clock at 4:29:18 and takes a huge lead of more than ten minutes onto the marathon course. He was certainly on his game as his bike time in 2012 on the same course was just over 4:47.

It would all come down to trying to catch McDonald on the 26.2 mile marathon course If Patrick Evoe hoped to repeat as Ironman Louisville champion.

At this point it didn’t look great for Evoe as Thomas Gerlach had moved into second place ahead of him on the bike course, but soon after the run began, Evoe was back in second place, but far back of the leader.

It was all Kate Bevilaqua and Nina Kraft up front for much of the race until about the half-way point of the bike when Bevilaqua appeared to be pulling away. It has been an excellent season for Kate as she continues to race well with Lake Tahoe next on her list.

However Whitney Garcia who hails from Boulder, Colorada moved into the picture and was less than two minutes behind the leader as Nina Kraft slipped down into third place.

By mile six The charge by Garcia had faltered and she fell over three minutes behind with Nina Kraft in third over five minutes back of Kate Bevilaqua.

By mile twelve Kate continues to build on her lead as the others continue to fall further back. It seems to be a continuation of Kate’s great season if she can keep it together for 14 more miles.

At 20 miles into the marathon Kate Bevilaqua is still holding the lead with Whitney Garcia in second and Canadian Brooke Brown has passed Nina Kraft and has taken over third place.

Kate Bevilaqua is the winner of Ironman Louisville with a winning time of 9:29:05.

Brooke Brown ran herself into second place near the end of the race.
