Ironman 70.3 Geelong Results 2016

On Sunday February 7 an excellent field of pros raced for Pro Points and $25,000 in prize money. Top age-group athletes in Ironman 70.3 Geelong Results 2016 competed for 50 qualifying spots for Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Mooloolaba, Australia.

Pretty much every top Australian pro entered to race in the 2016 version of Ironman 70.3 Geelong.

The race began with a 1.9km swim in Corio Bay followed by a two-lap 90km bike. The 21.1km two-lap run took the triathletes along the Geelong Waterfront. The run ended with a final 2km leg to the finish line in Steampacket Gardens.

Per Bittner of Germany, Callum Millward of New Zealand, and Cyril Viennot of France would be doing their best to prevent an Australian sweep of the podium in the Ironman 70.3 Geelong results 2016. A strong Australian contingent included Pete Jacobs, Craig Alexander, Jake Montgomery, Leon Griffin, and Clayton Fettell just to name a few podium candidates.

As the race got underway only Josh Amberger and Peter Kerr broke the 22 minute mark in the swim. However they had plenty of company close behind. Pete Jacobs, Jake Montgomery, and Casey Munro were all within 17 seconds of the leader as they reached transition one.

Jake Montgomery and Josh Amberger were racing at the front of the pack on the bike course as the pro men turned onto lap number two. Pete Jacobs was racing in third place.

Craig Alexander pulled out of the race and would not add to his five previous Geelong victories

At the halfway point of the run it was Montgomery who held down the lead with Amberger in second place and Viennot in third. Montgomery was just over one minute ahead of Amberger with 2km to go, but it was Viennot was still in third place.

Jake Montgomery would not be caught and take stop spot on the podium in the Ironman 70.3 Geelong results 2016 with a winning time of 3:51:48.

For the pro women Mareen Hufe, Annabel Luxford, Yvonne Van Vlerken and Rakda Vodickova were a few of the challengers hoping to break up Australian domination of the podium. Australian Mel Hauschildt appeared to be the one to beat depending on her early season conditioning.

Radka Vodickova was first out of the water for the pro women with a time of 24:21. Annabel Luxford was just ten seconds behind her in second place. Favorite Mel Hauschildt had about three minutes to make up on the two leaders.

It didn’t take long for Hauschildt to close the gap. At the 50km mark of the bike she was riding in second place just over a minute behind Luxford who was in the lead.

As the lead women exited the bike/run transition Hauschildt was the new race leader. At the halfway point of the run the lead was almost 1:30 for Hauschildt.

Melissa Hauschildt is the first across the line for the pro women with a winning time of 4:14:28. Annabel Luxford is second and Radka Vodickova of Czechoslovakia prevents an Australian podium sweep by rounding out the podium.
