Ironman 70.3 Calgary Results 2016

Strong pro field races for podium in Ironman 70.3 Calgary results 2016.

One of the strongest pro fields to take to the water in Calgary was featured in the Ironman 70.3 Calgary results 2016.

Both the pro male and female fields were overwhelmingly American with just a handful of pros carrying Canadian hopes of podium finishes.

Jeff Symonds appeared to be Canada’s best hope for the pro men, but he would be up against seasoned pros Trevor Delsaut, Matt Lieto, and Paul Matthews.

For the pro women as the gun sounded to begin the 1.2-mle swim in Auburn Bay Lake in South Calgary it fell on Canadian pros Malinda Elmore, Alexandra Gordichuk, and Rachel McBride to carry the Canadian hope in a predominately American female pro field.

It would be a surprise if anyone but Rachel McBride left the bike/run transition first as she is one of the fastest Canadian female pros on any bike course.

To nobody’s surprise it was Canadian Rachel McBride moving up from eighth in the swim to challenge for first place on the bike course. At about the 50k mark of the 90k bike leg McBride was less than 20 seconds back of the leader Jennifer Spieldenner of the USA.

McBride had a narrow lead as she entered the bike/run transition. Although her bike time was almost three minutes faster than Spieldenner, her swim was about three minutes slower so they were virtially neck-and-neck as they began the 21k run.

Ironman Lake Placid Results 2016

On Sunday July 24 Ironman Lake Placid Results 2016 featured pro women only.

It seems like eons ago when Ironman Hawaii and Ironman Lake Placid were the only two Ironman races in the USA.

Corey Deveaux and Amy Farell were the top age-group finishers in Ironman Lake Placid 2015 as there were no pro ranking points or prize money offered in the age-group only event.

However 2016 Ironman Lake Placid and 2016 Ironman Canada will feature split pro fields for the first time. It will be a pro men field only in Ironman Canada and the pro women will take center-stage in the Ironman Lake Placid results 2016.

“I think that this change for 2016 is a great step forward for female professional triathletes and I am pleased that IRONMAN is implementing new ways to highlight their female pros,” said reigning and three-time IRONMAN World Champion Mirinda Carfrae. “Women will be the first ones into the water and out on the course – this will help eliminate many of the crossover issues pro women face racing between the pro men and age-group athletes.”

American Heather Jackson seemed likely to be in the mix for a podium spot, but there were a few others in the field capable of surprising and winning it all.

The only female pros who could prevent a USA sweep of the podium were Annah Watkinson of South Africa and Caroline Martineau of Canada. They were the only non-USA pro females in the field.

FEMALE PRO START LIST

Avelar, Christine
Bliss, Neilia
Bruck, Kate
Ferreira, Amber
Green, Erin
Jackson, Heather
Jastrebsky, Rachel
Kaye, Alicia
Martineau, Caroline
Shutt, Beth
Valentine, Nicole
Watkinson, Annah

The first female pro out of the water was Alicia Kaye of the USA. As she left the swim/bike transition she had a lead of about five minutes over Annah Watkinson of South Africa. Amber Ferreira also of the USA was in third.

Martineau, Caroline	01:05:06
Valentine, Nicole	01:05:14
Bliss, Neilia 01:07:09

Much as expected, it was Heather Jackson of the USA first off the bike with a split time of 4:57:36. Alicia Kaye, also of the USA, was second into transition and Annah Watkinson of South Africa was third.

At the 20 mile mark Jackson was leading the race by over 30 minutes. The real race was behind her as Alicia Kaye and Annah Watkinson were just seconds apart for second and third.

Of those two it was Watkinson who seemed to gain the upper hand and began to pull away from Kaye as the pro women entered the final stages of the marathon.

Heather Jackson takes top spot on the podium in the Ironman Lake Placid results 2016 with a winning time of 9:09:42.
