Bonk Breaker Energy Bar – Ironstruck product review

The first time I actually had a chance to sample a Bonk Breaker Energy Bar was at the 2012 Inter-Bike Expo in Las Vegas at the Sands Convention Center.

It was such a treat to come across an energy bar that tasted so great, was easy to assimilate and at the same time had the perfect balance of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber, so it made it an easy decision to write a Bonk Breaker Energy Bar – Ironstruck product review.

It all started out with peanut butter and jelly.

I can remember several times in past years climbing Richter’s Pass in Ironman Canada in Penticton while trying to chew an energy bar that was hard and tasteless. When your heart rate is climbing and you are struggling to take in enough oxygen this is really the last thing you need to be worrying about.

It was not one energy bar in particular. There were several on the market at the time that were pretty much the same and I believe it has a lot to do with shelf life. After a certain period of time many of the energy/protein bars of the day seemed to get harder and more tasteless with age.

It makes you wonder if they were also losing their effectiveness as an energy source as well.

Freshness, nutritional balance, and competitive pricing are the corner-stones of the Bonk Breaker Energy Bar.

The power of the fig was not lost on Chris and Jason

I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Frank at the Inter-bike expo in Las Vegas. Chris owns and operates Bonk Breaker Energy Bar along with his business partner Jason Winn. Chris was a Category 1 Road cyclist and decided in 2005 that there was a real need for a quality energy bar.

The first bar his business partner Jason created in his kitchen at home was Peanut Butter and Jelly because the whole idea was to come up with a bar that tasted great and still provide an ideal nutritional balance that would provide athletes of all levels of ability an energy source that would help them perform at their optimum level and recover faster from physical exertion.

This energy bar is so good that they have been named the official energy bar of the Ironman Triathlon Series and are also a big hit with professional, Olympic and elite level teams as well as weekend warriors.

Apple Pie is one of the latest additions to the Bonk Breaker family

I can remember back in the early 1980’s when Dave Scott claimed that one of his energy foods of choice that helped power him down the Queen K. Highway in Kona to his six Ironman Hawaii victories was fresh figs. So pretty much every Ironman in the world back then was emptying all the local grocery shelves of fresh figs(well, there was only about 1200 of us in the world back then, but just the same we all tried to emulate Dave).

The power of the fig was not lost on Chris and Jason and this is a quote from them….

A sweet and delicious energy source that endurance athletes have relied on for decades, fig bars have sustained sportsmen and served as a favorite snack for people of all ages. But a wholesome fig-filled energy bar has not been available – until now. Bonk Breaker, which was recently named the official energy bar for all U.S. Ironman® events, has created an energy bar bursting with gooey fig that bodes to be an instant classic. Bonk Breaker Fig is designed to help athletes go the distance and fuel anyone in search of a nourishing treat made from all-natural ingredients free from dairy, gluten and soy.

This will give you the break-down of the balance that Chris and Jason have created with the Bonk Breaker Energy Bar.

This particular list of ingredients is the peanut butter and jelly Bonk Breaker, but all the bars have the same great nutritional balance. Each may vary a bit because of the main ingredients. For example, one would assume that the Fig Bonk Breaker Energy Bar would have a bit more fiber than some of the others.
