Ironman 70.3 Ireland results 2012

The second edition of Ironman 70.3 Ireland on Sunday September 2, 2012 featured Mike Aigroz from Switzerland who was on hand to try and top the Ironman 70.3 Ireland results 2012 and defend the title he won in 2011 .

Over 1500 athletes took part in the race.

The race took place in the countryside surrounding Galway. The venue for the 1.9 swim was Galway Bay, and was followed by a 90k bike and a 21.1 run course that took wound it’s way through Galway and Salthill.

As appears to be the current trend in 2012, races close to the World Championships are not getting a lot of pro entries because most of them have all the Kona Ranking Points they need and are resting up for the big shows in Las Vegas and Hawaii.

However the ones that were on hand In Galway posted some great performances.

Eimear Mullan entered the race as the favorite as she posted victories in Ironman 70.3 U.K. and Ironman U.K. Her biggest competition was expected to come from Tine Deckers in the four-woman pro race.

There were several pro men on hand who made the race for podium spots pretty interesting.

Ironman 70.3 Ireland 2012 featured several past Ironman winners including former Ironman 70.3 World Champion Terenzo Bozzone and Kirill Kosegarov of Estonia who was the winner of 2009 Ironman Florida.

THE RACE

If ever you could call a race a two-man race, Ironman 70.3 Ireland would be the one. From the time they left the water Jan Berkel and Terenzo Bozzone were never far apart. As a matter of fact, according to the official final results they crossed the finish line virtually together with Jan Van Berkel edging out Bozzone for the win by one second.

20ll champion Mike Aigroz finished in third place and was never quite able to close the gap on the two leaders.

In the short pro women’s field it was Tine Decker of Belgium who took the lead on the bike course from Natalie Barnard of Great Britain who had a lead of 2:30 on Decker after the swim. From there it was all Decker as she went on to win the race by almost eighteen minutes over Eimear Mullan of Ireland.
