Ironman Arizona Results 2014

Large and talented field of pros race for top spots in Ironman Arizona Results 2014

If Ironman Arizona is any indication, the pros are getting serious about building on their Kona Ranking Points for next year’s Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.

Both the male and female pro start lists featured very competitive and talented athletes from around the world and trying to handicap who would top the Ironman Arizona results 2014 as the gun sounded to start the 2.4 mile swim was pretty much an impossible task.

Also someone to consider is a male pro new to the Ironman distance. Canadian Brent McMahon has been doing very well in the 70.3 distance and could make some noise in this race if he manages to stay close on the bike. This guy can run…….

He topped the Ironman Augusta 70.3 results 2014 and in that race posted a 01:13:40 run split. Second place Viktor Zyemtsev(who is also racing today in Arizona)was second in Augusta and had a run split of 01:15:11.

Interesting to note that his swim split that day was 18:55 and winning time 3:43:03. McMahon really adds an unknown quantity to the race that is full of high level pros with plenty experience at the full Ironman distance.

McMahon could be another past Olympian who takes the Ironman by storm and very quickly propels himself to the top of the world pro pecking order.

Paul Matthews of Australia had the lead on the bike course at the 35 mile mark but had company. Clememte Alonso Mckernan of Spain was just five seconds behind him and David Kahn was 17 seconds back of the leader.

Jordan Rapp was moving along well in fourth considering he was about four minutes off the pace in the swim. He had made up plenty of time and was just over one minute behind the leader.

Rapp eventually took over the lead and began to pull away from the field. By the 85 mile mark Rapp had a lead of 1:15 over Mckernan.

It was turning out to be a very exciting race for top spot among the pro men. At the five mile mark Rapp was only five seconds ahead of Maik Twelsiek who was staying close in second.

However there was bad news lurking in the shadows for both of them as Brent McMahon was stalking them from third place and had 21 miles to make up two minutes. His running ability is simply amazing and Ironman Arizona was his first test as a pro at the full marathon distance of the Ironman run leg.

As mentioned earlier in this post, McMahon ran a 1:13 split for the half marathon when he won Ironman 70.3 Augusta. If you do the math, he is probably well capable of a sub 2:45 marathon depending on the course.

It was at the 13 mile mark where McMahon took over the lead and began to build on it. His half marathon split was 1:20:46 and he does seem on track for marathon time of around 1:45 allowing for his pace to drop off a bit. However one has the sense that he is saving the best for last and has another gear yet.

Jordan Rapp held onto second place 18 seconds back of the leader. At the 15 mile McMahon’s lead had grown to 49 seconds over Rapp. Twelsiek and Mckernan were over two minutes back fighting it out for third and fourth.

It appears that McMahon did have another gear and judged his pace exceptionally well. As he passed through the 18 mile mark his lead was over two minutes and growing with every mile. The battle for second place was heating up as Mckernan began to gain on Rapp.

With three miles to run McMahon’s lead had grown to 4:30.

Canadian Brent McMahon takes first place in the Ironman Arizona results 2014, his first attempt at the full Ironman distance.

It appears his time of 7:55:38 is the first time in history a first time Ironman has ever gone under 8 hours.

McMahon actually ran a 02:43:29. marathon. Who knows, he might’ve even eased off on the throttle in the last few miles.

Great job!

Jordan Rapp finished in third place behind Clemente Alonso Mckernan and in the process set a new bike course record.

Picking the winner for the women’s race was a bit easier, but still there were several entered in the race who were quite capable of taking top spot on the podium in the Ironman Arizona Results 2014 on their best effort.

The one certainty is that either Amanda Stevens or Meridith Kessler would be the first out of the water as they are both incredibly gifted swimmers.

Kessler figured to be the one to beat in this race.

THE RACE

You would expect it to have been a close swim between Meredith Kessler and Amanda Stevens as they are both such excellent swimmers.

It was a bit of a shocker to see Stevens almost two minutes behind at the end of the swim. Kessler posted a swim time of 50:22 and none of the other female pros managed to break 52 minutes for the swim.

Christina Jackson had an excellent swim as well and finished the 2.4-mile swim third and led a group of three out of the water.

Meredith Kessler showed no signs of slowing once she hit the bike course. After just the first loop she had a lead of 5:32 over Amanda Stevens who was still holding down second place.

Nearing the 95 mile mark there were changes near the top of the order. Kessler was still in front by 8:35, but now it was Heather Jackson of the USA taking up the chase.

Lisa Heutthaler was third and Amanda Stevens had slipped back to fourth place and was over 11 minutes behind Kessler.

As Kessler entered the bike/run transition her lead was about 7 minutes over Jackson who had an excellent bike and rode herself into contention for a shot at top spot on the podium.

However there was no catching Kessler. By the eight mile mark her lead had grown to over nine minutes on Heather Jackson and by 10 miles Lisa Huetthaler of Austria had overtaken Jackson for second place.

Lisa Huetthaler of Austria was in third place 1:20 back of Stevens.

By the 18 mile mark Kessler’s lead was still nine minutes over Huetthaler.

As Meredith Kessler nears the finish line with her lead of nine minutes still holding strong she is on track to win Ironman Arizona after ll attempts at the race. I guess you could say she knows the course really well…

Meredith Kessler takes top spot in the Ironman Arizona results 2014 with an official winning time of 8:50:41.
