Just another great race in Boulder.

Boulder is a favorite of many triathletes who return to race year after year.

Almost three thousand athletes answered the starting gun on Sunday August 3, 2014.

The single-loop 2.4-mile swim took place in boulder reservoir.

That was followed by one of the few single loop bike courses in the WTC Ironman circuit and it took them around Carter Lake before winding it’s way back to downtown Boulder and the bike/run transition at Boulder High School.

The two-loop 26.2-mile run took place on the Boulder Creek Trail and ended at the finish line on Pearl Street.

At first glance it appeared that the major players for the pro men would be Ritchie Cunningham and Joe Umphenour but Umphenour withdrew from the race and that left it wide open for Cunningham.

It remained to be seen if anyone would step up and challenge Cunningham for the top of the podium in the Ironman Boulder results 2014.

PRO MEN START LIST

Cunningham Richie
Daerr Justin
Defilippis Scott
Hillers Mark
Kristov Karol
Milam Jared

Zawaski Steven

As expected it was Ritchie Cunningham storming into the lead on the swim course and he entered the first transition with a lead of about three minutes after posting a time of 47:28.

Justin Daerr and Karol Kristov came out of the water just seconds apart in second and third place.

At the 80-mile mark of the 112-mile bike course Cunningham was still maintaining a lead of about four minutes over Justin Daerr who was riding in second with a big lead of over 14 minutes on Karol Krystov who was back in third.

Cunninghan took his lead onto the 26.2-mile run course and the only one close to him was Justin Daerr. At the 6-mile mark of the run the lead was three minutes. Third place Scott Defilippis was almost 30 minutes back of the leaders.

As the run progressed, Daerr began to cut into Cunningham’s lead and at the halfway mark was only 90 seconds behind the leader.

Daerr proved to be the stronger runner on the day and passed Cunningham and began to draw away. At the 22-mile mark his lead was just over four minutes.

Justin Daerr is the winner and takes the top spot in the Ironman Boulder results 2014with a winning time of 8:20:56.

It’s his first Ironman victory after finishing in the top five seven times.

Ritchie Cunningham finished in second place.

When the gun sounded to start the race for the pro women it looked like there would be a real battle between Uli Bromme and Laura Bennett for top spot on the podium in the Ironman Boulder results 2014.

Carrie Lester and Danielle Kehoe seemed to be nicely spotted for a podium finish in this race as well, but with the Ironman you just never know and any of these pro women were capable of surprising and winning it all on their best effort.

PRO WOMEN START LIST

Bromme Uli
Lester Carrie
Hammond Christine
Bennett Laura
Kehoe Danielle
Chaffin Morgan
Godesky Alyssa
Prystayko Olesya

Laura Bennett was the only female pro to navigate the 2.4-mile swim course in under 55 minutes.

Her time of 54:02 gave her a 35 second head start on Carrie Lester and Christine Hammond as they reached the swim/bike transition.

However it was Lester who took over the lead on the bike course and through the 70-mile marker had a lead of just over a minute on Laura Bennett, so it was shaping up to be an interesting marathon.

Lester built on her lead and it grew to just over five minutes into the run course. Bennett was is second with a four minute lead over Danielle Kehoe.

Carrie Lester could not sustain the pace and was caught and passed by Laura Bennett and eventually withdrew from the race.

Danielle Kehoe was in the mix now as she moved into second and began to move on Bennett. At the halfway point she was only 1:40 behind he leader and by the 16 mile mark had moved into the lead by over three minutes.

Danielle Kehoe tops the Ironman Boulder results 2014 for the pro women.

Laura Bennett finishes in second place in her first race at the Ironman distance.
