Ironman Cairns 70.3 results 2013

At race time the favorites to top the Ironman Cairns 70.3 results 2013 appeared to be Pete Jacobs and Tim Reed for the men and Samantha Warriner for the women.

Peter Jacobs is the current Ironman Hawaii World Champion and his most recent race was in Ironman 70.3 Hawaii 2013 where he finished far back in the field.

Jacobs was in the lead for the first 10km or so of the bike course when Craig Alexander passed him. Alexander would never look back and went on to win the race. Jacobs ran into difficulty on the bike and began to lose ground he could not make up as the race progressed.

Being the highly competitive and consummate professional he is, it was expected to be a far more positive result from Jacobs in 70.3 Cairns as he would attempt to atone for his showing in Honu.

None of the pro men were able to make a clean break from the rest of the field and the race for top spot stayed close until the end.

Courtney Anderson was solid in all three events. His bike split of 02:11:53 was good enough to keep him at the front of the pack going into the 21.1km run.

He parlayed that with the second fastest run split with a 01:16:35 and it was just enough to hold off a charging Brad Kahuleld who had the fastest run of the day with his 01:14:22 clocking.

Tim Reed fell off the pace in the run and rounded out the podium. Pete Jacobs was unable to stay with the leaders on the bike course and had to settle for fourth place.

Ange Castle was five minutes back of Niwata and took the last spot on the podium.

Warriner of New Zealand is the winner of Ironman Cairns 70.3 and was the only pro who stood in the way of Australia sweeping all six of the podium spots.
