Ironman California 70.3 officially kicks off the Ironman season for the North American Mainland in 2012.
There are two great races in the world of Ironman this weekend. California takes place Saturday March 31 and Ironman Texas 70.3 goes on Sunday April 1,2012.
Both Ironman races feature very competitive, high class pro fields and it should make for a great weekend of Ironman racing.
**As always, the pro entry list is unofficial as much can happen in the few days leading up to the race.
PRO MEN ENTRIES
For the pro men it seems that Andy Potts might be going in as the pre-race favorite as he is coming into the race as defending champion.
However he is up against some stiff competition as there are probably 8 other pro men in the race who are quite capable of making the podium or perhaps winning it all.
Matty Reed from New Zealand, Leon Griffin, Paul Ambrose, Matt Lieto, and Chris McDonald are just a few who could have a big impact on Ironman California 70.3.
My personal favorite to win is Ben Hoffman. Last year Ben won Ironman Boise 70.3, Ironman Muncie 70.3, and Ironman Branson 70.3.
Leon Griffin was second in the recently run Ironman San Juan 70.3 2012.
So my three picks in order are Ben Hoffman to win, Leon Griffin second, and Matty Reed third.
PRO WOMEN ENTRIES
Heather Jackson Lesley Paterson Magali Tisseyre Melanie McQuaid Linsey Corbin Meredith Kessler Amanda Lovato Mackenzie Madison Haley Cooper-Scott Beth Shutt Jessica Smith Jennifer Luebke Rachel McBride Trish Deim Beth Walsh Kristen Peterson Amber Ferreira Michelle Bremer Kathleen Calkins Rachel Challis Karen Thibodeau Kristin Andrews Katya Meyers Angela Axmann
As much as I would love to see Magali Tisseyre win I have a feeling that this will be Heather Jackson’s year. Not just because she was second to a hard-charging Mirinda Carfrae last year, but more because she has been taking a different approach to her training with her new coach Pete Coulson.
To me this means she is going all out to improve herself and is not afraid to think outside the box as she is incorporating Yoga, weight lifting, and mountain biking into her training regimen.
So my picks to top the podium are in this order……..Heather Jackson, Magali Tisseyre, and Linsey Corbin.
