Ironman Canada 2012 Preview

Ironman Canada 2012 Preview, Close to 3000 triathletes will be taking part in the 30th running of Ironman Canada on Sunday, August 26, 2012.

There are several intriguing factors surrounding this year’s race in Penticton, B.C.

—First of all I should mention that it’s Tuesday of Ironman Canada 2012 week and thunder and rain is currently going on. This may bode well for race-day as perhaps it signals a cooling trend is underway. It has been smoking hot in the OK Valley lately.

—Steve King will be the race announcer again this year and that is always special. There is nothing quite like that moment when you get close enough to the finish to hear Steve’s voice.

—Graham Fraser will be stepping aside after 17 years as Ironman Canada CEO. In Grahams own words “It is time to pass the torch and I hope the next 30 years are very special.” Thanks to Graham for all he has done over the years.

—there is hearsay that the pro prize purse has been reduced to $25,000 for 2012 with $5000 going to the winner as opposed to a $75,000 purse with $12,000 going to the winner in 2011. Considering that the prize purse was $50,000 in 1990 one has to ask…..What the H-LL! (there does appear to be a discrepancy as to exactly what the amount is. The Kona Points Ranking chart list the pro purse for Ironman Canada at $25,000 and the race guide for Ironman Canada lists it at $50,000)If I am able to confirm one way or the other I will post it here and until then the amounts are unofficial.

Considering Ironman Canada is one of the oldest running Ironman races in the world next to Kona, you would think it would be held in higher regard.

However the timing is not that great for those pros planning on going to Kona as there is simply not enough time between races and perhaps that would account for lowering the prize purse. Many of the best pros in the world will by-pass Ironman Canada with the new Kona Ranking Points system in place. The goal would be to have sufficient points earlier in the season as opposed to waiting to gain points in Mont-Tremblant, Louisville, or Ironman Canada.

Look no further than Mary-Beth Ellis who had to win 3 Ironman races(including Ironman Canada 2011 where she set a new course record)in a space of eight weeks in order to make it to the big show in Kona 2011.

By Ironman Hawaii 2011 race-day she had nothing left in the tank. I really think she is quite capable of winning Kona 2012 or at the very least be on the podium as she amassed enough Ranking Points earlier in the season. You heard it here first…..Watch out for a primed and rested Mary-Beth Ellis to take top honors in Kona 2012!

—Be aware that the water aid stations on the bike course are now 15-miles apart and not 10 as in previous years.

—I would expect there will be enough water at the Yellow Lake aid station this year that every triathlete will be able to stop and take a shower if they want.

—And how about this………

On March 23, 2010 Jordan Rapp was in a serious run-in with a vehicle on a training ride and was virtually left for dead. He suffered numerous broken bones including his clavicle and scapula, as well as contusions and lacerations about the head and neck. According to doctors, Rapp lost between two and three liters of blood as a result of the accident.

And then came back and won Ironman Canada 2011.

Now we have Janelle Morrison entered in Ironman Canada 2012 after being near death after a serious automobile accident on Nov 21, 2010. The list of injuries from the wreck included a ruptured diaphragm, broken arm, shattered femur, broken ankle and broken vertebrae and her stomach had shifted up into her left chest cavity.

However the race turns out for Janelle, she is an inspiration to many and reminds us of the strength of body, mind, and spirit that is so prevalent in Ironman athletes around the world regardless of their athletic ability.

***It’s Tuesday of Ironman race week 2012 in Penticton and I am writing this from my motel room in Naramata. Look for Ironstruck at the expo as we set up on Wednesday for the Thursday Expo opening.

Rumor has it that if you purchase a spiffy limited edition Ironstruck visor for $15 and wear it on race day you will have an excellent race result.

Okay, so I started the rumor……..so sue me.

Who the heck is going to win Ironman Canada 2012 anyway?

At first glance it appears that Christian Brader will be the one favored to take top spot on the podium. However, Matthew Russell could be a serious challenger and this could be his break-out race.

Meridith Kessler looks very tough for the pro women, but she could be run down in the marathon around Skaha Lake somewhere if she misjudges her pace. Madison Mackenzie sure can run and may mount a serious charge late in the race to take top spot.

On her best effort, Samantha McGlone would be a serious contender, but she has been off form for some time.

It does seem to be a bit of a surprise that Meredith is racing Ironman Canada as she has already qualified sixth for Ironman Hawaii and the World Championships are not all that far away.

A special message for those doing their very first Ironman……..No matter how much it hurts out there keep repeating these four words of wisdom…

“This Too Shall Pass”

And believe me, no matter how much it hurts, there is nothing quite as special as waking up the morning after the race and realizing what you have accomplished.
