IRONMAN CANADA WHISTLER RESULTS 2015

This is the second time Ironman Canada has taken place in Whistler since being moved from Penticton.

Trevor Wurtelle and Uli Bromme were the winners of Ironman Canada Whistler 2013.

Wurtelle was back to defend his title but Bromme was not entered in the race.

The course featured a two-loop 2.4-mile swim in Alta Lake, a one-loop 112-mile bike which included the Sea-To-Sky Highway, and a two-loop 26-mile run that ended in the Whistler Olympic Plaza.

When the starting gun sounded it seemed that Marino Vanhoenacker was the main obstacle for Wurtele if he wanted to repeat as Ironman Canada champion. Then of course there was Matt Lieto and Ambrose to get past as well.

This was a very high quality field of pro men and from the beginning it proved to be a great race for podium spots in the Ironman Canada Whistler results 2014.

PRO MALE START LIST

Trevor Wurtele
Marino Vanhoenacker
Matt Russell
Matt Lieto
Stephen Kilshaw
Andrew Drobeck
Devon Palmer
Anthony Toth
Jeff Symonds
Paul Ambrose

MALE PRO RACE

Marino Vanhoenacker led the way out of the water with a swim time of 50:56 and Jeff Symonds and Paul Ambrose were right behind him.

Trevor Wurtele and Matt Lieto were also within ten seconds of the two leaders as the first five men entered transition one virtually together.

As expected it was Marino Vanhoenacker of Belgium taking command on the bike course. He began the run with a lead of over nine minutes on Paul Ambrose.

Trevor Wurtele of Canada(the defending champion)was just over ten minutes back of the leader as the run began.

It’s pretty hard to catch Marino Vanhoenacker when he goes into the run with a lead and he built on that lead and took top spot in the Ironman Canada Whistler results 2014 in a time of 8:16:10.

That put him quite a was in front of Jeff Symonds who ran the fastest marathon time of the day to take second spot over Paul Ambrose who finished third.

There was really no overwhelming favorite for top spot among the pro women as at least four of them were capable of winning on their best effort. Karen Thibodeau appeared to have a slight edge on the strength of her results so far in 2014.

She was one of four Canadian pros who were in the top five in Ironman 70.3 Hawaii earlier in the season and appeared set to take a run at the top of the podium in Whistler 2014.

PRO FEMALE START LIST

Jackie Arendt
Bree Wee
Karen Thibodeau
Anna Cleaver
Mackenzie Madison
Christine Fletcher
Jenni Plane

FEMALE PRO RACE

Anna Cleaver was fastest in the swim with her time of 53:09. Karen Thibodeau of Canada was second about three minutes back.

Bree Wee and Jackie Arendt were also right in the mix less than 20 seconds behind Thibodeau.

None of the pro women created a substantial break on the 112-mile bike course and unlike the men, the race for podium spots was wide open as the run began.

As the end of the 180k bike neared it was Karen Thibodeau hanging onto a slim lead of 40 seconds over Madison Mackenzie.

Bree Wee and Jackie Arendt were less than 1:30 off the leader’s pace and at that point it was shaping up to be a very exciting marathon as less than two minutes were separating the top four pro women.

With 14k to run there was still little to separate the top three women.

Bree Wee had a lead of 1:38 over Karen Thibodeau and Madison Mackenzie who were running together.

It was shaping up to be one of the closest finishes of the year for all three podium spots. Often you will have two pros fighting it out for first and second, but this time there were three pros who could well take it right to the wire before the three top spots are decided.

With 9.5k to run Bree Wee began to slowly pull away and her lead grew to 2:39 over Karen Thibodeau who had a narrow nine second lead over Madison Mackenzie who was running in third.

Bree Wee proved to be the strongest of the three in the final third of the marathon and is the very deserving winner of the top spot on the podium in the Ironman Canada Whistler results 2014.

Her winning time was 9:46:58 and it’s her second Ironman victory.
