Pre-race favorite Michelle Vesterby was about two minutes off the pace after the swim.

Four pro women worked their way to the front of the pack and by the 55k mark of the bike had a lead of over four minutes on the nearest competitors. The group in front included Corrie Kristick, Michelle Vesterby, Celine Shaerer, and Nicola Spirig.

In the later stages of the 112 mile bike it was Vesterby and Spirig breaking away with Kristick over three minutes back in third place. Shaerer was a minute further back in fourth place.

Vesterby was able to create a gap between herself and Spirig and took a lead of just over two minutes onto the marathon course.

However Spirig kept pushing the pace and passed Vesterby. At the 21k mark Spirig had a lead of 24 seconds. Spirig is used to maintaining a fast run pace. She is the 2012 Olympic champion and is taking on the Ironman distance for the first time.

Like many other Olympians, it seems apparent that she will do very well at the professional level.

***The fastest runner of the day to the halfway point of the marathon for both pro men and women is Kelly Williamson who posted a 1:27 flat half marathon time. She has run her way into fourth spot and has a great shot at making the podium on her current pace. Her last 7k split was about five minutes faster than current third place Celine Schaerer who is fading, which means Williamson will soon be in third. ***

Spirig continues to pull away from Vesterby and with 5km to run is almost three minutes ahead.

Nicola Spririg is the 2014 Ironman Cozumel Champion. Michelle Vesterby is on her way to a second place finish.

Kelly Williamson ran herself into third place as she passed Celine Schaerer at the 35k mark.
