Triathletes visit Yucatan Peninsula to race for spots in Ironman Cozumel results 2016.

A strong international field of male and female pros gathered in Mexico to race for podium spots in the Ironman Cozumel results 2016.

The winners of Ironman Cozumel 2015 were Stefan Schmid and Corinne Abraham. They posted winning times of 8:12:27 and 9:06:40.

Abraham was on hand to defend her title but a new male Cozumel champion would be crowned as Schmid was not entered in the 2016 race. Matt Russell finished second in 2015 with a time of 8:14:10 and went into the race as a likely challenger for the top of the podium.

A group of seven pro men all finished the swim under 44 minutes and all that separated them was 11 seconds. Barrett Brandon was first out of the water with Stephen Bayliss just four seconds off the leaders pace.

Michael Weiss of Austria took over the lead on the bike course when he posted the days fastest bike split. Igor Amorelli from Brazil was close behind in second and Frederik Van Lierde of Belgium was third.

Frederik Van Lierde took over the lead on the run course. At the 30k mark he had a lead of almost three minutes on 2015 winner Matt Russell. Michael Weiss slipped down to third a further two minutes back with Chris Lieferman close behind in fourth.

At this point in the race it seemed likely the three podium spots in the Ironman Cozumel results 2016 would be contested by these four male pros. The rest of the field was over ten minutes back of the leader.

There was no catching Frederik Van Lierde of Belgium and he crosses the finish line first in the Ironman Cozumel results 2016. His winning time was a very fast 8:03:09.

Lauren Brandon was first out of the water for the pro women. Unlike the pro men, Brandon had separated herself from the field. She was the only female pro under the 50 minute mark with her excellent swim of 45:43. That would’ve placed her right behind the lead pack of men according to her time.

A closely grouped pack of four women were about five minutes back of the leader as they entered the swim\bike transition.

It was Denmark dominating the bike leg for the pro women. Michelle Vesterby and Camilla Pedersen were four seconds apart in the swim and two seconds apart in the bike as far as split times.

Vesterby and Pedersen led the way onto the marathon course, but Lauren Brandon of the USA was hot on their heels. Although Brandon was about four minutes slower on the bike course, she was almost five minutes faster in the swim than the two leaders.

As the second half of the run began it was Camilla Pedersen holding a lead of around 1:30 on Michelle Vesterby. Lauren Brandon was still within striking distance in third. She was just 3:09 behind the leader.

You just knew this would happen. With less than 7k left to go Michelle Vesterby caught and passed Pedersen. However, her lead was only nine seconds. What a great race from these two Danish stars.

At this point it was anybody’s guess who would be standing on top of the podium for the pro women in the Ironman Cozumel results 2016 once the dust settled.

Lauren Brandon was quickly falling off the torrid pace and was over six minutes back of the leader. Rachel McBride of Canada was another eight minutes back in fourth spot.

What a finish it was! Michelle Vesterby takes the top prize in the Ironman Cozumel results 2016 with a winning time of 9:08:06.

Vesterby won by nine seconds over Camilla Pedersen. Lauren Brandon rounded out the podium.
