Ironman France results 2012

Over 2500 triathletes will be on hand to answer the starting gun of Ironman France 2012 on Sunday June 24, 2012.

The Cote d’Azur has been home to triathlons since the beginnings of the sport back in the early 1980’s. It probably has more spectators than any Ironman race in the world with in the neighborhood of 80,000 spectators expected to line the course on race-day.

THE IRONMAN FRANCE 2012 COURSE

The 3.8km 2-loop swim will launch from the Plage Du Centaire and take place in the Mediterranean Sea. From their the race becomes even more spectacular as it will take cyclists through no less than 17 towns that line the 180km route.

It’s a challenging bike course that features 1800 meters of climbing through the surrounding mountains.

The four-loop 42.2km run course is certainly spectator friendly and will take the runners along the Promenade des Anglais.

So who is going to win Ironman France 2012?

With the race just half a day away it’s time to take a shot at picking the winners.

Frederik Van Lierde is the defending Ironman France champion and will be on hand to defend his title. However he will most likely get very stiff challenges from Axel Zeebrock, Bruno Clerbout, and Trevor Delsaut.

PRO MEN

****Lance Armstrong is not racing but should be in the race. I put Lance on the start list as I am sure he is at the Cote d’Azur in spirit and on the minds of many triathletes both pro and age-grouper alike and also spectators who were on hand for Ironman France 2012 and hoped to see Lance in action.

It’s a compact but very loaded female pro field taking to the start line of Ironman France 2012.

If Gina Crawford is back in form after taking a year off, she will be tough to beat. However, she may not quite be there yet as it may take her a bit longer to get to her top level of endurance endurance.

In that case the winner could well be Tine Deckers if she is on top of her game.

IRONMAN FRANCE 2012 RACE DAY

At the race start the temperature hovered around the 21C mark and it promised to be a great day of racing.

In the early stages of the swim it was Federik Van Lierde leading the way. Patrick Amey was close behind with Alex Zeebroek in third.

Martina Dogana and Gina Crawford are the early leaders for the women.

A group of three pro men reached the end of the swim together. Van Lierde, Pannier and Zeebroek had a one minute lead over Paul Amey who was by himself in fourth spot.

Frederik Van Lierde seemed to have a good bike plan in place. It was sort of like “I’m going to bike as fast as you can and just see who can stay with me.” Well after 70k it was only Anthony Pannier who managed to stay close.

Zeebroek was in third almost seven minutes back and Chabaud was in fourth over ten minutes behind. So at this point it was a two-man race but there is still plenty of ground to cover before the day is over.

In the race for top spot among the pro women race it is Gina Crawford leading at the 64k mark. Tine Decker is just over two minutes behind and Anne Basso is almost 10 minutes down in third place.

Van Lierde began to pull away as they entered the second half of the bike course and soon had a lead of over three minutes on Anthony Pannier.

At the 118k mark Tine Decker took the lead for the pro women. It should be a great marathon ahead as both of these pro women are strong runners and it will be interesting to see who holds up best along the Promenade des Anglais in the heat of the day. It is already almost 27C on the bike course.

Alexandra Louison is over 16 minutes pack of the two leaders in third place and as expected, this has become a two-woman race so far in Ironman France 2012.

PRO MEN RACE SPLIT AT BIKE/RUN TRANSITION

Van Lierde Frederik.............05:25:39
Pannier Anthony.................05:40:09
Zeebroek Axel...................05:46:47
Dorez Pierre....................05:47:40
Amey Paul.......................05:47:48

By the time Tine Deckers reaches the bike/run transition she is leading Gina Crawford by over five minutes. That actually makes perfect sense because as mentioned earlier, it may take Gina a bit more time to re-build her endurance after taking a year away from the pro triathlon circuit to have her baby.

Tine Deckers took the lead on the bike course

Mustn’t forget about Kristin Moller. She won both Ironman Wales and Ironman UK last year and she sure can run. She is currently running in fourth spot and will most likely be in third very soon. She may not win, but if Gina Crawford falters at all Moller could slip into second place before the dust settles.

At the 16k mark of the run Tine Decker continues to run strongly and has a lead of almost eight minutes on Gina Crawford.

Paul Amey has come far back to move into second spot for the pro men. Although Amey is putting together the fastest run splits of the day, he is a long ways back of the leader.

What a day of racing in the triathlon world today as the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblant is just getting underway and Ironman 70.3 Japan is in the books. Ironman 70.3 Syracuse, Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs, and Ironman Coeur d’Alene are also slated for Sunday June 24, 2012.

Frederik Van Lierde is currently on pace to break the course record. All depends how much he slows down as he does appear to be easing off on the gas pedal.

Wow! What a lead. Paul Amey is running in second spot and is 22:20 behind the leader late in the run.

The race is official now. Fredrik Van Lierde has won the race in 8:21:50 and set a new course and bike record in the process.

Paul Amey crossed the finish line in second spot with a time of 8:42:48. Amey posted a great marathon time of 2:52:15.

Going into her final lap, Tine Deckers maintained a lead of nine minutes over Gina Crawford. It looked for all the world that Gina would be caught by a charging Kristen Muller but though the 26k mark the gap was still 14 minutes and Gina is holding tough.
