Ironman Lanzarote results 2012

Ironman Lanzarote is considered by many triathletes to be one of the toughest Ironman races in the world. Recent temperatures in the area hit highs of over 40 degrees Celsius but a cooling trend was forecast for the May 19, 2012 running of Ironman Lanzarote.

The swim is two-loops and begins on the beaches of Puerto del Carmen. There is a short beach run between the first and second loops.

The bike course features over 2500 meters of elevation as it circumnavigates the island. Although there is plenty of climbing to do on the bike course, veterans of Ironman Lanzarote claim it is the unrelenting winds that create the biggest challenge of all.

IM Lanzarote-one of the toughest but also most schenic Ironman bike course.

Few things are more demoralizing on an Ironman bike course than climbing huge hills and then being hit in the face with wind so strong on the flats that it feels like you are still climbing.

At first glance it seems like the three biggest challengers for the top spot on the podium for the pro men will come from Bert Jammaer who has won this race twice(2008-2009)and Stephen Bayliss who had his best year in 2008 when he won Ironman South Africa and Ironman UK.

Phillip Graves should also do well, but has gained a bit of a reputation of going out too hard on the bike and getting run down in the marathon.

Just the same there are several very strong pro men in this race who could upset and pre-race favorites.

For the pro women much depends on how ready Bella Bayliss is to race after taking time off to have a baby last year.

Bella certainly knows her way to the Ironman winner’s podium as she has been there 16 times over the years.

Although Katya Meyers and Nicole Woysch can also be expected to make their presence felt before the day is done Michelle Vesterby is quite capable of winning it all coming off her strong performance in Ironman Melbourne when she stuck with several top pros through much of the race.

THE RACE

Phillip Graves appeared to be the favorite to come out of the water first as the Ironman Lanzarote starting gun was answered by 1550 triathletes, but there were some others who were accomplished swimmers in their own right.

Just a point of interest on Petr Vabrousek: He hasn’t raced since IM South Africa when he came in sixth. Later on in 2012 he plans to enter four Ironman races in four weeks beginning with Ironman Regensberg.

It is Stephen Bayliss who is the first to jump out in front on the bike course early on and Michelle Vesterby is leading the way for the women. Michelle is quite capable of leading the entire bike, but it is the marathon that might be her biggest challenge.

Once Phillip Graves takes over the lead on the bike course he powers away from Stephen Bayliss and creates a two-minute break between himself and the chase riders.

It's a very challenging bike course.

Michelle Vesterby is up to a four-minute lead over Nicole Woysch with Saleta Castro a dos and Bella Bayliss a bit further behind.

As the pro women are situated right now it would seem the Nicole is sitting in the best spot of all. She has a far faster marathon best over Michelle Vesterby and of course Bella Bayliss can do some serious damage in the marathon if she is on her game.

The best hope Michelle has to win this race is to get enough of a gap on the others leaving the bike/run transition that she can hold them off for the win. She would probably need 10-12 minutes to hold off Bella and Nicole.

Peter Graves had a big lead heading out onto the marathon course.

Philip Graves is the first to reach the end of the bike course and has over a 16-minute lead over Steven Bayliss who is currently third. It looks like Graves will fall short of Thomas Hellriegel’s bike course record.

New-comer Victor Del Corral had a great bike split and sits just six minutes back of Phillip Graves.

Victor Del Corral is competing in his very first Ironman today and looks great. He is a former Spanish duathlon and duathlon-cross champion so certainly has the endurance to do well today.

Pre-race favorite Bert Jammaer is in sixth place 19-minutes back as he heads out onto the run course. Maybe it was his strategy all along to take it easy on the bike and save himself for the run.

Michell Vesterby predicted before the race that she would lead coming off the swim and bike and she has done just that.

Her time cushion heading out onto the run course is ten minutes over second place Heleen Bij de Vaat. Nicole Woysch has lots of time to make up as she is far back of the leader.

You can almost feel an upset in the making. Ironman rookie Victor Del Corral continues to close on leader Phillip Graves and there is plenty of time left as they are only at the 15k mark of the marathon.

At the 20k mark Del Corral is just 2:03 behind leader Phillip Graves and what a great race the rookie is having.

For the pro women, Michelle Vesterby is showing no signs of slowing down and at the 5k mark is still 10 minutes in front of Bij de Vaate who is being closed on by Bella Bayliss who is performing admirably after taking time off from Ironman competition to give birth to her baby Charlie.

To put Michelle’s marathon pace into prospective, if she maintains her lead she will force the chasing women to run very close to a 3-hour marathon. In the past Rachel Joyce has gone just under 3:04 and Canadian great Peter Reid won this race with a 3:01 marathon.

All things being considered, if Michelle can stay steady for the majority of the marathon she will win the race, but then anyone who has been there knows the Hell and the Fury of the last 15k of an Ironman Marathon, age-groupers and pros alike.

Bella looks great and is pounding out a 3-hour marathon pace and if she manages to run down Michelle and win this race she might decide to have another baby……..just because.

Whatever works. The time off has left her well-rested and in fine form.

Just waiting for an update on the men from the spotters as they close in on the 25k mark.

It looks like Phillip Graves has hit the wall in the marathon as expected after his sensational bike split, and the new leader is Victor Del Corral. Stephen Bayliss is 9:39 behind.

Currently, things are looking great for the Bayliss family as they are both headed for podium finishes. All that remains to be seen is just how high up they are on those podiums.

However, through 30k of the marathon all Victor Del Corral has to do is hold it together and he will win his very first try at the Ironman Triathlon.

He is still up 9:25 on Stephen Bayliss and 15:53 on Bert Jammaer. Whatever happens this is a truly remarkable performance by Del Corral on one of the world’s most challenging Ironman courses.

Things are getting very interesting for the women on the marathon course. Bella, the other Bayliss has also moved into second position just as her husband has done on the pro men side.

Word has it that neither woman looks great out in the blazing sun and they still have 20k to go. Welcome to Ironman Hell.

Bella has been here many times and if Vesterby caves in, Bella will win. If Michelle can maintain a steady run she will be hard to catch. So we will see as the sun blazes down on these tough, tough athletes.

Wow! What a performance by Ironman newcomer Victor Del Corral. He is showing no signs of slowing down and has maintained the gap he has over Stephen Bayliss who still holds down second place and is nine minutes behind with the race in the very late stages.

Victor Del Corral is the winner of Ironman Lanzarote 2012 in a time of 08:44:40.

Stephen Bayliss finishes in second place in 08:53:38.

According to race spotters, Michelle Vesterby is tiring badly with still over 10k to go in the marathon an but also tiring.

One can only imagine the inner-struggle these two women are dealing with right now.

Victor Del Corral is also a former winner of the Alpe d’Huez triathlon and although he may be new to many in the world of Ironman, Stephen Bayliss was well aware of his capabilities before the race started.

In an interview at the finish line Bayliss stated, “I didn’t really anticipate being able to catch Del Corral.” He felt the European Tri-Cross champ would be too strong to catch on the marathon but Bayliss was thrilled with his second-place finish.

Michelle Vesterby has gone through the 35k mark and is hanging tough as she tries to win her first Ironman after three tries.

The gap is 8:13 and unless Vesterby stops running she will be hard to catch with just 7k to go.

It’s a war of attrition. Vesterby ran the last 10k in 54:26 yet has maintained her large lead because all the women have slowed down in the heat of the day.

As we wait for the first pro woman to cross the line, here is a look at the six age-group males in the 35-39 category who will be on their way to Kona.
