Ironman Lanzarote results 2014

It takes a very tough and dedicated triathlete to see their name as part of the Ironman Lanzarote results 2014 and Saturday May 17 was no exception.

Over the years many people have asked the question, “What Ironman Triathlon is the toughest?”

Every Ironman race is a challenge no matter where it is in the world, but there are races like Lanzarote that raise the bar even higher.

Not only does the 112-mile bike course feature over 2500 meters of climbing, it also tosses in headwinds that have been known to push people right off their bikes.

If the hills and wind don’t get to you then perhaps the relentless heat will.

Faris Al-Sultan was the winner in 2013 on strength of his bike split that was ten minutes faster than anyone else.

As it turns out, that was about the same amount of time he was ahead of the second place finisher. His winning time was 8:42:40.

Female pro Kristin Moeller demolished the field and won by over half an hour. Her marathon time alone was the fastest by a 19 minutes. Kristin crossed the line in 9:37:34.

As the race got underway it was Dane Henrik Hydelund who was first pro to finish the two swim laps and he took a lead of 12 seconds into transition one with a 3.8k swim time of 47:19.

He was followed closely by Romain Guillaume, one of the pre-race favorites, and in all there were five pro swimmers coming in under the 50-minute mark.

It didn’t take long for Romain Guillaume to assert himself on the field and he was soon in the lead out on the 180k bike course, but he had company.

Henrik Hyldelund was right there with him and surged into the front as they reached the top of the Fire Mountains.

According to course reports the infamous Lanzarote winds were really beginning to pick up.

Bert Jammaer, Dominik Berger, and Kirill Kostegarov were in the third, fourth, and fifth positions.

Near the end of the next climb it was Guillaume re-taking the lead from Hyldelund and he soon created a gap of over a minute.

Guillaume began to stretch his lead out in the last half of the bike course.

Guillaume was not the strongest runner in the field and it seemed like he was trying to get as much of a lead as he could before beginning the 42k marathon.

However as he entered the bike/run transition he only had a lead of around one minute on second place Hyldelund, but after an excellent transition increased it to over 1:30 as he began the run.

The real threat seemed to be Bert Jammaer who closed almost two minutes on the leader as they reached the 10k mark of the run and was less than six minutes behind with lots of running left to do.

Hyldelund in second did not appear to be a threat to the leader as he was steadily losing ground.

By the halfway point Jammaer was in second place and had closed the gap on the leader to within four minutes, but Guillaume was not fading as many expected and began to pull away again.

With under 15k to go he had extended the lead back over six minutes.

With an exceptionally strong and well-paced run Romain Guillaume could not be caught and he comes out on top of the Ironman Lanzarote results 2014 with a finish time of 09:41:40.

Lucy Gossage was biking well and moved into third place behind Susan Blatt by the time the lead women were into the second big climb and began to close the gap on the two leaders.

When the pro women began the run it was Susan Blatt who was in the lead over a fading Stefanie Adam.

However once past the 15k mark of the run it suddenly appeared to be a two-woman race as Blatt held a lead of 1:30 over Lucy Gossage who had moved into second place.

With 10k still to run Lucy Gossage is in the lead but Susan Blatt of Germany is hanging in there 45 seconds back of the leader.

Corinne Abraham is 10 minutes back in third place.

Lucy Gossage was not going to be caught on this day and she takes top spot in Ironman Lanzarote results 2014 with a winning time of 09:41:40.
