Ironman Louisville results 2012

As race day approached on Sunday August 26, 2012 Nina Kraft and Chris McDonald were expected to do well and have a good chance to defend their 2011 Louisville champion titles.

There are many things about Ironman Louisville that make it a very unique member of the Ironman family that has grown to around 30 races around the world as the 2011 edition of this event takes place.

The race takes place in and around much of Louisville’s most scenic areas that include the city of LaGrange, Waterfront park and Oldham and Henry Counties.

2012 Ironman Lousiville results

Over 3000 triathletes were on hand for Ironman Louisville 2012

It’s a point-to-point swim that has a very unique format. So unique in fact that I believe it is the only Ironman race in the world that has this method of swim start.

It’s actually a time trial swim start where it’s first come first served. The swim begins with age-group triathletes jumping off the dock at Tumbleweed Southwest Grill to begin the swim and making their way to Great Lawn 2.4 miles away.

The pros will start as a group before the age-groupers his the water.

The swim sees the competitors swim against the current alongside Towhead Island before heading back down to transition with the current.

The bike course is two loops and cyclists have until 6 p.m. to finish the Ironman Louisville bike course or they will not be allowed to begin the run. Triathletes will pass by the Lousiville Slugger factory, the University of Louisville, and Churchill Downs home of the Kentucky Derby.

The run is also 2-loops and the finish line is at Fourth Street Live and may be one of the most impressive finish line areas in the world according to many of the triathletes who have had the opportunity to experience Ironman Louisville.

The temperatures were predicted to be on the hot side with perhaps a chance of lower humidity from previous years.

IRONMAN LOUISVILLE 2012 RACE-DAY

Much like the 30th and final running of Ironman Canada on the August 26, 2012 many of the top pros by-passed Louisville as most have already earned the necessary Kona Ranking Points to qualify for the World Championships in Hawaii in the Fall of 2012.

For most pro Ironmen Louisville is just to close to Ironman Hawaii in order to attempt to do both unless it is necessary in order to earn some last-minute points, much as Mary-Beth Ellis did in Ironman Canada in 2011. As a matter of fact Mary-Beth actually won three Ironman races in the space of 8-weeks late in the season in 2011 in order to qualify for the big show in Kona.

She struggled in Kona and it was most likely because she had to race so many big races in order to get there, plus there were big expectations weighing on her to do well.

Look for Mary-Beth to perhaps win Kona this year as she is going into the race rested and in top form.

It appeared going into the race on Sunday August 26, 2012 that the two main contenders would be Patrick Evoe and Chris McDonald who was on hand to defend his 2011 victory.

The final order of finish was determined when Patrick Evoe over-came a two-minute deficit in the swim to take charge of the race and he never looked back and is the Champion of Ironman Louisville 2012.

Chris McDonald was unable to stay with the bike pace set down by Patrick Evoe but took second spot by a wide margin over Thomas Gerlach who rounded out the podium.

It looked for all the world that Nina Kraft would have a great opportunity to retain the championship she earned in 2011 in a very small field of pro women, but it was not to be. The Ironman being the Ironman, you just never know what any given Ironman race-day is going to bring about.

Bree Wee and Jackie Arendt were locked in a duel right from the swim/bike transition and Bree Wee managed to run the marathon two minutes faster than Arnedt and that proved to be the difference and Bree Wee is the champion of Ironman Louisvile 2012 for the pro women.
