Ironman New Zealand results 2014

Where has the time gone? On Saturday March 1, Taupo enjoyed it’s 30th anniversary of putting on a WTC Ironman event and the Ironman New Zealand results 2014 once again featured excellent efforts by both pro and age-group athletes alike.

Ironman New Zealand boasts athlete participation from every corner of the world, and why not?

From all reports it’s a great place to race and an equally great place for a holiday once the finish line is crossed.

Last year the pro winners of Ironman New Zealand 2013 were Bevan Docherty and Meredith Kessler and they both returned in 2014 in an attempt to defend their 2013 titles.

As a matter of fact, Kessler was going after three wins in a row in New Zealand.

They both faced a pretty big challenge as $75,000 prize money pretty much doubled the size of both the pro male and female fields.

RACE DAY

It was a blazing fast swim time for the pro men as the first eight out of the water were under 46:30. It was Marko Albert who held a short ten second lead over the rest of the tightly bunched pack.

There must be a heck of a current pushing the swimmers along because these times are pretty quick for a 2.4-mile swim.

Looking back on 2013 Marko Albert was under 46 minutes and Kessler was under 47 minutes in 2013 so the New Zealand Ironman swim seems to be consistently fast.

If you compare it to Kona where the best Ironman pros race every year, there’s not too many of them who go under 50 minutes in ironman Hawaii.

Either there are some favorable currents or the course is short for some reason, but that’s unlikely as New Zealand is one of the best organized Ironman races in the world.

Speaking of course measurements, it reminds me of the time I ran in this 50-mile Ultra-marathon and a volunteer put a course marker in the wrong spot at about the 47-mile mark and we all ran 51 miles(all 13 of us).

When you feel like death at mile 40, an extra mile is the last thing you need.

But on the bright side when someone tells me they ran a 50-mile race, I can say big deal…I ran a 51-miler.

Marko Albert of Estonia stayed at the head of the pack in the bike and at the 125k mark was in the lead by almost 1:30 over a very large, motivated chase group of nine riders.

By the 150k marker Albert was still in the lead and the pack was beginning to split up behind him.

Romaine Guillaume of France and Phillip Graves were in second and third spot less than 2:30 back of the leader.

Cameron Brown of New Zealand was in fourth place up to this point and having an excellent race in a very talented field.

Marko Albert had a bike split of 5:29:04 and by the time he reached the bike/run transition his lead had grown to over five minutes on Graves and Guillaume who were in second and third place.

Cameron Brown, Guy Crawford, Bevan Docherty, and Tim Van Berkel were still in touch but had a lot of ground to make up.

Nearing the half-way point of the run it was Cameron Brown in second place, but almost six minutes behind the leader.

It was a great effort by Brown as he closed to within 3:30 with less than 10k left in the marathon, but ultimately he just ran out of time.

Marko Albert of Estonia was brilliant in victory as he led pretty much from start to finish and comes out on top of the Ironman New Zealand results 2014.

His official winning time is 8:17:33.

For the pro women in the swim it was Meredith Kessler and Anna Cleaver making a break from the pack with times of 46:47 and 46:57 respectively.

They finished over four minutes ahead of Gina Crawford who was third in 51:02.

Kessler and Cleaver also broke away from many of the pro men. An excellent swim for both of them.

Kessler took off from the rest of the field at the mid-point of the bike and began building on her advantage over Gina Crawford who was riding in second spot.

Meridith Kessler was certainly in the hunt for a repeat win in New Zealand and at the 85k mark of the bike had a lead of almost four minutes over Gina Crawford.

Anna Cleaver was in third place and over eight minutes back of the leader.

As the race progressed the rest of the field fell further and further behind and it was looking more and more like another win for for Kessler.

Even a flat tire late on the bike course didn’t slow Kessler down all that much, but it did allow Gina Crawford an opportunity to close the gap.

However, Crawford was still almost seven minutes behind Kessler by the time she started out on the run course.

At this point it was looking a lot like the Kessler/Crawford finish of Ironman New Zealand 2013.

Crawford wasn’t giving up and with half the marathon still to go closed the gap to just 4:30.

According to spotters on the course Meridith Kessler was struggling a bit through the closing stages of the race.

Well, doesn’t everybody?

However she had a large lead of over six minutes over Crawford and took the top spot on the podium in the Ironman New Zealand results 2014.

It is her third Ironman New Zealand victory in a row and in the process her winning time of 9:08:45 smashes the course record of 9:14:35.
