IRONMAN SOUTH AFRICA 2011 RESULTS
The top finishers of Ironman South Africa 2011 results have been declared and it turns out to be story-book finish.
MENS OVERALL WINNERS
Raynard Tissink has taken first place in the Ironman South Africa 2011 results in a time of 8:05 and in doing so broke his own course record by over 20 minutes.
Andreas Bocherer was the first one out of the for the men in the swim and was first out of the water and Raynard Tissink was next about a minute down, but he led a fairly large pack into transition.
Marino Vanhoenacker reached T2 first with a very fast 4:18:14 bike split, which is unofficially a new course record for the bike leg.. Tissink reached T2 next about 2 minutes down with a 4:19:41 split.
Raynard Tissinks winning time in the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa 2011 the process breaks his previous record by a full 20 minutes and with a truly spectacular victory on his home soil.
He had a 4:19 BIKE split and a 2:53 RUN split.
WOMENS OVERALL WINNERS
Not only did Chrissie Wellington win the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa Ironman, she made it 11 Ironman victories in a row. This is also a new world record.
That includes 3 Hawaii Ironman World Championships as well.
There are several noteworthy points about Chrissie’s victory in the Ironman South Africa 2011 results.
–Her splits of SWIM-0:51:40 BIKE–4:45:23 and RUN–2:52:54 for a winning time of 8:33:56 were amazing to say the least.
–Her marathon run time of 2:52:54 was faster than that of all the pro men including the overall winner Raynard Tissink who went in just over 2:53 for the marathon.
–Her finish time of 8:33:56 was a course record by over 40 minutes.
–She was 8th overall and within 28 minutes of first place overall.
–Rachel Joyce crossed the line in second about 35 minutes later and Diana Riesler finished third, almost 47 minutes later.
I have always maintained that the only thing preventing the best women pros from winning the Ironman overall is the bike split. It seems to come down to a simple matter of muscle mass.

Once again the numbers confirm that somehow being stronger on the bike leg of an Ironman is the answer to a woman being first overall in an Ironman.
The swim and the run and the transitions pretty much balance out.It was the very same with Paul Newby Fraser who had spectacular marathons, but would be 20 minutes or so behind the winning pro man on the bike.
It seems that if anyone could find a way it might just be Chrissie. Maybe she might profit by taking what the Puntos Twins told me back in Kona just before Hawaii Ironman 1984.
“We never really got really strong on the bike until we started to do squat sets over and over in the gym.”
Sylvianne and Patricia went on to be first and second for the women that year.
So maybe that’s where the answer is if the pro women ever hope to challenge the pro men for top spot overall in any Ironman race. Hit the weight room.
