Ironman Sri Lanka 70.3 Results 2012

Sri Lanka is home to both an inaugural ironman 70.3 and 5150 Series race on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

THE PRO MEN

RHODES, Bryan
HORNER, Kent
AL-SULTAN, Faris
DEGASPERI, Alessandro
RIX, Josh
CRONEBORG, Fredrik

It’s an extremely small pro field in Sri Lanka and it’s appears doubtful that Faris Al-Sultan will be kept off the top spot in the podium all things being equal. Bryan Rhodes will also most likely be near the front and will gain some valuable Kona ranking points.

Faris Al-Sultan

PRO WOMEN

ZELENKOVA, Lucie
SYM, Christie
RABE, Ktja
HORNER, Claire
WAGNER, Dana

The field for the pro women is also quite small and Chrisie Sym should be making a run for top spot here with a strong challenge from Lucie Zelenkova.

THE RACE

In the swim, all the pro men stayed in a group and just 10 seconds separated 5 of the 6 pros.

THE RUN

It didn’t take long for Faris to put his stamp on this race as he took over the lead on the first lap and might be on his way to victory as the only real challenger is Bryan Rhodes who he just passed.

As expected it was Christie Sym and Lucie Zelenkova neck and neck leaving the bike transiton for the 21k run.

It was Faris Al-Sultan running away at the front in the Inaugural Ironman Sri Lanka 70.3 and looks to be the winner and it should be official shortly. It’s official now and Faris has won in the incredibly quick time of 3:51:39 despite the tropical heat of Sri Lanka.

Bryan Rhodes held on for second, Alesandro Degasperi 3rd, Fredrik Cronebourg 4th, and Kent Horner was 5th.

Christie Sym was over-taken by Lucie Zelenkova at last report. An update will be coming shortly but the lead is now 2 minutes and it’s looking very good for Lucie who was the winner of Ironman South Africa 2009 and Ironman South Africa 70.3 in 2009.

Lucie Zelenkova of the Cezch Republic wins for the pro women in 4:30:17!

The first place finisher for the age-groupers was Aj Anderson with a time of 4:10:31 and that was good enough for 5th place overall.
