IRONMAN WALES RESULTS 2011

September 11, 2011 is a big day in the triathlon world. It’s an especially huge day in Wales where the Ironman Wales results 2011will be the first recorded in this inaugural event.

Ironman Wisconsin and Ironman Muskoka 70.3 will also be taking place as the kick-off to a new season. The pros will begin earning points toward the Ironman 70.3 and Ironman distance World Championships in 2012.

The Ironman 70.3 World Championships for 2011 also go today in Nevada. Might as well mention that the ITU Grand Final is also taking place all weekend in Beijing.

There are over 1300 athletes competing in the inaugural Ironman Wales as the race gets under-way. Aaron Farlow and Kristin Moeller are both racing today and they are the winners of Ironman UK 2011.

Weather conditions have meant a few changes to the swim course. The water temperature is a chilly 15c. I say chilly because in the ITU race in Beijing that just went earlier in the day the water was 25c.

In the swim it is Oliver Simon who grabs the lead as the leaders leave the first transition. Oliver is a local pro and will have plenty of crowd support.

Edo Van Der Meer, Markus Thomschke, and Daniel Mueller were the ones closest to Simon. The swim leader Oliver has fallen off the pace.

For the women it’s still Anja Ippach who leads going into the run and she could be hard to catch.

The wind is still pretty relentless but at least the sun is coming out.

Aaron is from Australia and is quite capable. It’s a bit of a surprise as it was expected that local pros might well win the inaugural Wales Ironman.

In the women’s race there are actually two age-group athletes right up near the front. However it seems unlikely that Anja Ippach will be caught today.

The last we heard of Garth Barfoot is that he was doing well on the bike course. Garth is the oldest competitor at 75 years old.

This is a great story. Luis Alvarez from Mexico is the only man to have raced every single Ironman in the world! He prides himself on doing the first of every new event.

This is his 77th Ironman race and I think that means we will be seeing Luis at the inaugural Ironman Mont-Tremblent Quebec. The race is sold out with over 2500 entries from 52 countries.

Wow! Kristen Moeller has stormed into the lead of the women’s race and it is quite surprising considering the lead that Anja had at one time.

Late in the race Jeremy Jurkiewicz is making a charge on the leader Aaron Farlow but he may run out of time.

In a sprint to the finish Jermey Jurkiewicz catches Aaron Farlow and takes top spot on the podium in the Ironman Wales results 2011 by 5 seconds.
