VANCOUVER MARATHON RESULTS 2011

The Vancouver Marathon Results 2011 are in the books and there were several surprises and excellent performances.

THE “MORNING LINE” FAVORITES

Originally it was Kenyan Thomas Omwenga who was considered one of the favorites on the men’s side and a threat to repeat after winning the 2010 Vancouver Marathon in a time of 2:16:55.

Challenges were expected from countrymen Kiprotick Mengich, Nickson Kiptolo, Bernard Arasa Onsare, the 2009 winner and one other Kenyan.

It was even considered a possibility that with the Kenyans running in a pack as they tend to do, they may well have broken the course record of 2:13:14 set by Garry Henry way back in 1980.

This was one of the expectations since most of the Kenyans expected to race had personal bests under 2:15.

As far as the women go, Keddi-Anne Sherbino of Kelowna was expected to do well coming off a win(in her very first marathon)last Fall in Okanagan Marathon in Kelowna. Her time was a very respectable 2:53:30.

Those who are familiar with the marathon and endurance events in general are well aware that if Keddi-Anne can run a marathon that fast as a 21-year-old, she has a very bright future in front of her.

The main challenge was expected to come from Kenyan Hellen Cherono Koskei who has gone as fast as 2:29:33.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

Benard Onsare, born in Kenya and currently living in Calgary was the over-all winner with a time of 2:19:59 and was just over 3 minutes ahead of another Kenyan Gilbert Kiptoo.

The 2010 winner Thomas Omwegna did not show up, nor did two other Kenyans who are capable of running under 2:15.

Needless to say, this did not thrill the organizers.

The Kenyans are brilliant, gifted runners and I just have to say they were always my idols when I was in the midst of my marathon and Ironman Triathlon career as an age-grouper.

However the Kenyans are and always will be mercenary runners. They go where the money is and most likely the prize money in Vancouver did not meet their criteria.

Benard Onsare

They might claim malaria, a bad hair day(oh, maybe not), or the dog ran away with their shoes, but ultimately if first prize had been $25,000 they most likely would all have shown up. Which begs the question, “why even say you are coming?”

Regardless, it was a great performance by Benard Onsare and he was a deserving winner and highly deserving of top spot in the Vancouver marathon results 2011.

Several of the top Canadian men did not enter the race and are keying on the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October. They include Dylan Wylkes of Vancouver, Reid Coolsaet, and Eric Gillis who are both of Guelph.

Toronto is offering a $36,000 bonus for anyone who can better Jerome Drayton’s Canadian record of 2:10:09. Maybe there will be 50 Kenyans in the race, who knows.

On the women’s side, Keddi-Anne was sensational and showed everyone that her win last Fall in Kelowna was just the beginning of her career.

She bettered her personal best by 10 minutes and was first with a time of 2:43:38. Allison Macsas of Austin, Texas was second and just over a minute behind in a time of 2:44:50.

Of course Keddi-Anne also won the “first Canadian woman” award and Graeme Wilson of Vancouver was “first Canadian man” with a time of 2:30:07.

I hope to include age-group results on this page when I am able so come back and visit.

I just have to say that Keddi-Anne could one day be one of the best women marathoner’s to ever lace up a pair of running shoes in Canada. I sincerely hope that she develops her endurance slowly over the coming years.

Keddi-Anne Sherbino

It’s very exciting to think that Keddi-Anne is most likely over 10 years away from reaching her peak as an endurance athlete. She has so much potential and I hope that she looks to the future and does not “burn” herself out at early age. Her Vancouver marathon results 2011 certainly were spectacular.

It happens far too often with promising young athletes. Hopefully destiny will lead her to the perfect coach who can bring her along slowly.

I also hope she incorporates a heart-rate monitor into her training one day, but that’s just my own who thoughts on it. A carefully constructed heart-rate monitor program will prevent Keddi-Anne from doing too much, too soon and in effect can help prevent injury and over-training.
